LGBTIQ Domestic and Family Violence Interagency NSW

The interagency is made up of government, local and state and  non-government organisations. We have representatives from NSW Police Force, NSW Health, women’s refuges (DV NSW),  City of Sydney, the Inner City Legal Centre, Safe Relationships Project and ACON’s LGBTI Domestic and Family Violence Project.

The LGBTIQ DV Interagency meets monthly and we have strong attendance at all of our meetings.  We work to raise awareness relating to DFV in our diverse communities and this includes providing resources (such as the Another Closet website and booklet), in-service training, professional development sessions, a reporting line and assistance with reporting to police and a biannual conference.

Our last conference in 2011 was the first National LGBTIQ DV Conference and was a huge success.  We have also contributed to Canadian academic, Janice Ristock’s book Intimate Partner Violence in LGBTQ Lives (Duffy, Kate; Chapter 11,Routledge, 2011) on the Interagency's work promoting best practice and service provision to LGBTIQ people affected by DFV in Australia.

The interagency has been working together since 2000.  At the moment we are also working on establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ DFV Advisory Committee to inform our work with these communities and ensure that it is culturally appropriate and effective.  We are also trying to engage better with our partners in rural, regional and remote areas.
